SUICIDE PREVENTION COMMUNITY ACTION PLAN
In 2017 the Townsville Suicide Prevention Network developed a Community Action Plan as an active response to the rapidly increasing suicide rates that were found within the encapsulation of the outer Townsville region. This plan captured the ten fundamental strategies that the network would work hard to put into action over the coming three years to reduce the number of suicides that were occurring across the region including Townsville, Charters Towers, Ingham and Palm Island.
The Community Action Plans are based on the Black Dog Institutes LifeSpan framework, utilizing the 9 strategies and including a 10th strategy specific to Townsville.
The network saw this plan through to 2020 where they looked at and reviewed the progress that was made across the region using these 10 fundamental strategies. In 2021 the network released a Community Update on the progress and accomplishments made in 2017-2020 Townsville Community Suicide Prevention Action Plan.
In July 2022, the 2022-2023 Townsville Whole of Region Suicide Prevention Community Action Plan was officially released through a partnership led by selectability, one of regional Queensland’s largest and leading providers of mental health services, supported by the Black Dog Institute, funded by North Queensland Primary Health Network (NQPHN) and guided by our communities, and particularly those with a lived experience of suicide.
This plan remains the most recent plan available to guide suicide prevention activities locally.
Today, the Suicide Prevention Community Action Planning (SPCAP) group, supported by NQPHN continues to further develop plans to support suicide prevention activities in the north Queensland region. The purpose of Suicide Prevention Community Action Planning (SPCAP) is to lead the collaborative development of coordinated community plans for suicide prevention activities across the Northern Queensland region.
The TSPN bring the Townsville community’s voice to this planning group ensuring it is a central part of suicide prevention planning for the Townsville community.
