The Townsville Suicide Prevention Network (TSPN)

The Townsville Suicide Prevention Network’s focus is on increasing community awareness around suicide in the region, improving the community’s capacity to recognise and respond to people in distress and to better coordinate suicide prevention efforts to reduce the number of suicide attempts and deaths within the Townsville region. 

The network seeks to engage the Townsville community, including individuals with lived experience, government and non-government organisations, community groups, sporting clubs, students, academics, mental health professionals, small and large businesses, and concerned individuals. 

Mission 

The Townsville Suicide Prevention Network work together to raise awareness, listen to our communities and take combined action to reduce suicide in our region. 

Purpose 

The purpose of the Townsville Suicide Prevention Network (TSPN) is to bring together like-minded members with the aim to reduce suicide through raising awareness, reducing stigma, promoting help-seeking behavior, and educating and resourcing communities. 

Driven by the Townsville Community for the Townsville Community 

 

Objectives 

The objectives of the TSPN are to: 

  1. Promote help-seeking behaviours and pathways to care for individuals at risk.
  2. Seek feedback from the community to identify and advocate for required services.
  3. Engage with services and community groups to address local issues.
  4. Engage with and advocate for people with a lived experience of suicide and bereavement as a result of suicide.
  5. Support existing services within the community to strengthen awareness of mental health and wellbeing.
  6. Engage with and promote inclusion for people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
  7. Encourage community members to be involved and contribute to the TSPN.
  8. Maintain close contact with local Elders and a strong connection with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community in relation to suicide prevention.
  9. Engage with young people in the community, including those who identify as LGBTIQIA+ to include their perspectives and ideas in Network activities.
  10. Engage with and support defence veterans suicide prevention activities.
  11. Maintain confidentiality, integrity, and compassion
